About Rameswaram

Where the mainland ends and the sacred geography of the Ramayana begins

Rameswaram is one of the four Char Dham pilgrimage sites of India, and the place where, according to the Ramayana, Lord Rama built the bridge to Lanka. At its heart is the Ramanathaswamy Temple — its corridors, lined with carved pillars, run longer than any other temple in the country, a slow walk through cool stone and shifting light.

Beyond the temple town, the land narrows to a thin spit of sand at Dhanushkodi — a former town flattened by the 1964 cyclone and never rebuilt, now a quiet ghost settlement where the Bay of Bengal meets the Indian Ocean. Further along the coast, Ariyaman Beach offers an unbroken stretch of white sand, a different register of this island entirely — open, empty, and coastal rather than sacred.

Ramanathaswamy Temple
One of the Char Dham, famed for the longest temple corridor in India — over 1,200 pillars carved in granite, running the full length of the complex.
Dhanushkodi
A ghost town at the tip of the peninsula, abandoned after the 1964 cyclone. Reached by road and a final stretch by jeep across sand, ending at Arichal Munai where two seas meet.
Ariyaman Beach
A wide, quiet stretch of white sand on Rameswaram's coast — a calmer counterpoint to the pilgrim town, good for a slow afternoon by the water.
