The Journey

Five chapters across South India

Chapter One
Madurai — The Living Temple City
Nights 1–2
The journey begins in Madurai, where Exotic Destination is based. This is not incidental — it means the first two days have depth unavailable to travellers who pass through. Dawn puja at Meenakshi Amman. The midnight food circuit in the temple lanes. A morning with a Madurai silk weaver whose family has worked the same loom for four generations. The city calibrates your senses for everything that follows.
Chapter Two
Chettinad — The Merchant Princes
Nights 3–5
Drive to the Sivaganga district. Three nights in Chettinad — the landscape of ancestral mansions, Athangudi tiles, and the most complex cooking in Tamil Nadu. Private access to mansions not open to the public. A family meal with crab curry and Kavuni Arisi. A cooking lesson with a family cook. The antique bazaar at Karaikudi, where surplus treasures from the great merchant houses still surface.
Chapter Three
Thanjavur & The Chola Delta
Nights 6–8
North to Thanjavur and the Cauvery Delta — the heartland of the Chola empire and of Tamil Brahmin temple culture. The Brihadeeswarar temple at dawn. The Airavatesvara stone chariot at Darasuram. The forgotten capital at Gangaikondacholapuram. A full banana-leaf feast in the Thanjavur tradition. The bronze casters who still use the lost-wax process unchanged for a thousand years.
Chapter Four
Kerala — Wellness & High Altitude
Nights 9–12
Cross into Kerala through the Western Ghats. Thekkady and the Periyar Tiger Reserve — elephant at dawn on the lake, spice estates in the afternoon. Then Munnar's tea country at 1,600 metres: cloud forest, the tea factory in processing season, the estate at first light with mist in the valley below. Down to Kumarakom for the Ayurvedic programme — physician-designed Panchakarma, at least three nights for genuine effect, on the shores of Vembanad Lake.
Chapter Five
The Backwaters — A Different Pace
Nights 13–14
The journey ends on the water. Your traditional kettuvallam houseboat boards at Alleppey and moves through the backwater network at two kilometres an hour — rice fields, palm forests, water buffalo, the occasional church rising from the vegetation. Dinner cooked by your boat's chef. The night moored in silence, the sound of water and the occasional call of a waterbird. A final morning on the backwaters before transferring to Cochin for departure.

Why this journey works
The pace
Fourteen nights allows two or three nights at each stop — enough to go beyond the first impression. Most travellers leave South India wishing they'd had more time. This journey resolves that problem by design.
The sequence
The journey moves from Tamil Nadu's bold, ancient, architectural culture into Kerala's green, gentle, restorative landscape. The contrast is intentional — the end of the journey restores what the intensity of the beginning has opened up.
The base
We are in Madurai. Not in Delhi, not in a distant city. The relationships that make the difference — the Chettinad families, the Thanjavur art historians, the Kerala Ayurvedic physicians — are ours, built over thirteen years of operating on the ground.
