Munnar

About Munnar

Tea country in the Western Ghats, at 1,600 metres

Munnar takes its name from the confluence of three mountain streams — Mudrapuzha, Nallathanni and Kundala — that meet here in Kerala's high range. The drive up reveals the landscape gradually: hairpin roads giving way to terraced tea estates that roll over every visible hillside, planted by British planters in the 19th century and still worked today.

The air is markedly cooler than the plains, the light is softer, and the pace slows. Working tea factories offer a look at the process from leaf to cup, while the surrounding Western Ghats hold patches of shola forest and grassland that are part of a UNESCO World Heritage biodiversity hotspot.
