Kerala is South India's great contrast to Tamil Nadu — where Tamil Nadu is dry, ancient and temple-centred, Kerala is green, maritime and layered with a different set of cultural influences: Syrian Christian churches from 52 CE, Jewish quarters, Dutch and Portuguese forts, and the Ayurvedic healing tradition that predates all of them.
The landscape moves from the Western Ghats tea estates at Munnar through the spice country of Thekkady to the flat backwater network that runs the length of the coast. The Vembanad lake at Kumarakom, the Alleppey canals, the Periyar wildlife reserve — these are not attractions but different expressions of the same extraordinary geography.
