Mysore was the capital of the Wadiyar kingdom — one of the princely states that managed to survive British rule with its culture largely intact. The result is a city of genuine grandeur: the Mysore Palace is among the most spectacular in India, the Devaraja Market is one of the finest in South India, and the craft tradition — silk, sandalwood, rosewood inlay — is still alive and working.
Mysore sits at the edge of the Western Ghats, making it a natural base for Kabini wildlife safaris (80km), Coorg coffee estates (120km), and the ancient temples of Belur and Halebidu (150km). It is one of the most versatile bases in South India.
