Pondicherry was a French colonial settlement for nearly three hundred years, and its old quarter still carries that history — mustard and ochre facades, bougainvillea spilling over garden walls, street names in French script, and a grid of quiet lanes that invites slow walking rather than sightseeing. Heritage mansions in the French Quarter, many lovingly restored, now operate as boutique stays, including Maison Perumal, a Tamil merchant house turned heritage hotel.
A short drive inland is Auroville, an experimental township founded in 1968 around the ideal of human unity. At its centre stands the Matrimandir — a golden geodesic sphere set among gardens, visible from a viewing point even when interior access requires advance booking. Together, the French Quarter and Auroville give Pondicherry a register entirely different from temple Tamil Nadu — contemplative, architectural, and unhurried.
