Wayanad is the highland plateau of northern Kerala — coffee and tea estates, dense forest, and one of the highest tribal population densities in Kerala. The Kuruva Island in the Kabini river, the Edakkal Caves with their prehistoric rock carvings, the Banasura Sagar dam surrounded by the Ghats — Wayanad rewards slow travel.
The wildlife corridor connecting Wayanad to Nagarhole and Mudumalai makes it part of one of the largest protected forest areas in India. Elephant sightings are common. The endemic lion-tailed macaque is easier to spot here than almost anywhere else.
